Cochrane - Smooth Rock Falls Victim Crisis Assistance was born as Cochrane and Area Victim Services. In 1997 representatives from various services in Cochrane were brought together and through discussion they gleaned that a VCARS style model of service to assist victims of crime, tragedy and disaster would be very beneficial.
Since 1998 the Service has grown from a group of 1 part time Coordinator and 4 volunteers working with local fund raised monies and an Ontario Trillium Foundation grant to a full blown VCARS site with a satellite office in Smooth Rock Falls. Annualized funding from the Ministry of the Solicitor General and now Attorney General gave the security needed to grow and stabilize.
In 2003 the name of the organization was changed to Cochrane - Smooth Rock Falls VCARS to better include the volunteers and community of Smooth Rock Falls and to become recognized through out the province as a VCARS site.
Cochrane - Smooth Rock Falls VCARS covers a large area. The Quebec border to the east, Tunis area to the south, west to Strickland, and north to Fraserdale and Moosonee.
Volunteers provide a variety of services/supports to victims which may include immediate on site assistance, support at hospitals or Police detachments, or in homes, as well as providing community agency referral information.
